Nanjing has seen many representative authors and classical works of literature and art in the history of Chinese literature, the most famous poetry and authors among them are the poems recalling antiquity of Nanjing by Liu Yuxi. Du Mu and Li Yu, the play "Peach Blossom Fan" by Rong Shangren and the novel "the Scholars" by Wu Jingzi.
Calligraphy was most flourishing in Jin Period with the accomplishment of calligraphy by wang Xizhi and wang Xianzhi, father and son as a symbol.
Since the rise to prominence as well-known capital of the Six dynasties, Jin Ling (the present Nanjing) had become extraordinary in the history of Chinese painting and art; Zhang Sengyao was the most famous painter of Nanjing during the Xiao Liang Dynasty, the idiom "Bring a picture of a dragon to life by putting in the pupils of its eyes -add the touch that brings a work of art to life" is a vivid description of his unique skill. During the period of the Five Dynasties and the Ten Kingdoms, the Southern Tang Dynasty established the Imperial Painting Academy in Jin Ling (present Nanjing), which played the role of forming a connecting link of their pinnacles between what had already been achieved before and what was obtained afterwards in the art of the Tang and Song dynasties.
