Chongqing ,called 'Yu' for short, spreads across a hilly peninsula of land lying between the Jialing River to the north and the Yangzi River to the south. The rivers meet at the tip the peninsula at the eastern end of the city. In 1997 Chongqing was designated the fourth special municipality.
Chongqing is one of the historical and cultural cities of China. During the anti-Japanese war the city was the wartime capital of the Kuomintang government.
Well-known traditional food includes Sichuan spicy hotpot and beef soup.
