Tianjin's major historical relics are:
1. Dule Temple This temple is an ancient wood structure. Inside,
the centerpiece is a 16-meter-high clay statue of the Buddha
Lady, which dates back to the Liao Dynasty (907-1125 AD).
2. Huangyahuan Great Wall This section of the Great Wall is
very famous. It was restored by General Qi Jiguang during the
Ming Dynasty to defend invaders.
3. Food Street This is a covered alley with two levels of restaurants.
Besides various delicious foods, the ethnic buildings on this
street are also very attractive.
The New Year posters first appeared in the 17th century in
the town of Yangliuqing. Woodblock prints are hand-coloured,
and are considered to bring good luck and happiness.
The terracotta figures originated in the 19th century with
the work of Zhang Mingshan. The small figures take themes from
human or deity sources and the emphasis is on realistic emotional
expressions.
The Wei kites were created by master craftsman Wei Yuan Tai
at the beginning of the century, although the kite has been
a traditional toy in China for thousands of years. These handicrafts
can be found in the Ancient Culture Street.
The most famous Tianjing cuisine specialty is Goubuli Baozi,
a sort of steamed bun filled with pork meat, spices and gravy.
