There are about 12,000 Bonan people in China. Most of them reside in Gansu Province, and the rest live in Qinghai Province, and the rest live in Qinghai Province. The name of this ethnic group is based on the name of the region where they live. Some historians consider that the Banans probably originated from a Muslim Mongolian tribe migrated to the region during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, others say that they are the descendants of the Hui people who moved to the region from Sichuan and Shanxi provinces long time ago. Their language belongs to the Mongolian branch of the Altaic language family. It has no written form. Agriculture is their main occupation. The chief farm products include wheat, barley, potatoes, and buckwheat. Bonan knives are a specialty of the ethnic group.
