The Daur nationality has a population of 121,000. Most of the Daur people reside in the Inner Nongolia Autonomous Region. A few of them live in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In ancient time the Daur nationality was called Dahur and Dawur. Historians have different views on the origin of the Daur people. Some consider that the Daurs probably were the natives of the region, others say that they are descended from the Khitan nomads. The Daur people have no written language. Their spoken language belongs to the Mongolian branch of the Altaic language family. After liberation the economy of the nationality was greatly developed.
