The Derung nationality has a population of 5,800. They mainly live in Yunnan Province. According to historical records, the Derung people were called Qiuren in ancient time, and their ancestors lived in the vast area between the Nu River and the Mailikai River. Their spoken language belongs to the Tibetan-Burmese group of the Chinese-Tibetan language family. The language does not have written form. Agriculture is their main occupation. The chief farm products include corns, mustard seeds, and beans.
