The Dongxiang nationality has a population of 373,000. Most of the Dongxiang people reside in Gansu province, and the rest live in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Xinjiang. The Dongxiangs originated from the Mongokian nationality and Semu people who were Moslems. They have no written language. The Dongxiang language belongs to the Mongolian branch of the Altaic language family. Agriculture is the mainstay of the nationality. The people grow potatoes, wheat, barely, corns, and broad beans. The potatoes are very good. Raising sheep is also their main job.
