The Bai nationality is distributed mainly over Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan and also distributed over other area of Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Hunan provinces. The population is 1.594 million. The Bais call themselves "Baihuo", "Baini" and "Baizi". The Bais' ancestry was known as "Baiman". The Bais have their own language, belonging to the Chinese-Tibetan language family. They have no written language of their own. The Bais are mainly engaged in agriculture, growing rice and wheat as the main crops. The marble quarried from the Dali district is very famous.
