The Dai Nationality mainly lives in compact communities in the Yunnan Province. Its population is 1.025 million. The Dai Nationality calls itself "Dai Le", "Dai Ya" and "Dai Na" etc. The Dai Nationality has a long history which was recorded in the Chinese historical accounts of the past events far in the first century AD. The Dai Nationality has its own language and writing. The former belongs to the Chinese-Tibetan language family while the latter is alphabetic one of Sanstrit origin. The ploughing technique of the Dai Nationality is rather intensive, the major product of which is paddy.
