The Tungs are distributed over Guizhou, Hunan provinces and Guangxi Chung Autonomous Region. The population is 2.514 million. The Tungs call themselves "Gan"; they were generally called "Dongren", "Dongliao" and "Dongmiao" recorded in the historical literature. The Tungs' ancestry came from a branch of "Baiyue" tribe in the ancient time. The Tungs have their own language belonging to the Chinese-Tibetan language family, which continue to use the Chinese writing. The Tung nationality mainly goes in for agriculture and is also engaged in forestry at the same time. The main agricultural produce is the round-grained non-glutinous rice.
