The Kirgiz nationality has a population of 141,000. Most of Kirgiz people reside in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The rest live in Heilongjiang Province. The ancestors of Kirgiz people lived on the uper reaches of the Yenisey River in ancient time. In the mid-sixth century AD, the Kirgiz tribe was under the rule of the Turkic Khanage. The Kirgiz people speak a language belonging to the Turkic subdivision of the Altaic language family. Their written language is an alphabetic system of writing based on Latin letters. Animal husbandry is the main occupation of the Kirgiz people.
