The Naxi nationality has a population of 278,000. Most of the Naxi people reside in Yunnan Province, and the rest live in Sichuan Province and Tibet. The Naxi people are the descendants of a tribe called Mosha Yi in the third century AD. The Naxi language belongs to the Chinese-Tibetan language family. In the seventh century AD, the Naxi people created their own pictographic characters called Dongba. However Modern Chinese has become their major means of communication because of their close contact with the Han people. Agriculture is the main occupation of the Naxi people. The chief farm products include rice, corns, potatoes, wheat, beans, cotton, and hemp. The Naxi regions are rich in forest resources. The areas around the bend of the Jinsha River are heavily covered with forest. The Yulong Mountains is known as a Flora Storehouse. Where contains a large variety of valuable trees and herbs.
