There are about 29,000 Pumi people in China. They mainly live in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. The Pumi people call themselves puyingmi, Purimi, or Peimi. Their ancestors were a nomadic tribe roaming about the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The language of the Pumi people belongs to the Tibetan-Burmese language group of the Chinese-Tibetan language family. Agriculture and animal husbandry are their mainstay. The chief farm products include corns, wheat, and barley.
