There are about 87,000 Salar people in China. Most of them reside in Qinghai and Gansu provinces. The Salar people call themselves Salarer. Their ancestors were the Samarkand people who migrated from central Asia to China during the Yuan Dynasty (1271AD-1368AD). The formation and development of the Salar people was a continuous process of integration of the Samarkand people with Tibetans, Huis, Hans, and Mongolians. The language of the Salar people belongs to the Tujue branch of the Altaic language family. It has no written form. Agriculture is the mainstay of the ethnic group. The chief farm products include wheat, barley, potatoes, buckwheat, and chili peppers. The fruit that they produce are pears, apricots, grapes, dates, apples, and walnuts.
