There are about 4,800 Tatea people in China. Most of them live in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. This ethnic group used to be called Dada. Their ancestors migrated from the middle reaches of the Volga River to Xinjiang during the 19th century. Their language belongs to the Turkic language family of the Altaic language system. The written language is based on Arabic letters. The Tatar people also use the Uygar and Kazak languages. Trade and handiwork are their main occupation. A few of Tatar people are engaged in animal Husbandry and agriculture.
