There are about 172,000 Xibe people in China. Most of them live in Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces. A few of them reside in Xinjing. Regarding the origin of this ethnic group, some historians consider that they are the descendants of the ancient Xianbei people, others think that their ancestors were the Mongols and Manchus. The language of the Xibe people belongs to the Manchu-Tungusic branch of the Altaic language family. The written form is based on the Manchu script. Agriculture and animal husbandry are mainstay of this nationality.
