Wenzhou is one of the three major cities directly under the leadership of Zhejiang provincial government. Located in southeast Zhejiang Province, Wenzhou faces the East China Sea to its east and is near the Oujiang River to its north. The city was firstly built during the reign of Emperor Ming in the Eastern Jin Dynasty and has a history of more than 1,600 years.

Located in the southeast coastal area of Zhejiang Province, Wenzhou is the political, economy and communications center in southern Zhejiang Province and has a total population of 7 million, with a total area of 11,783 square kilometers.

Wenzhou enjoys a vast sea area and a coastline of 355 kilometers, forming ideal natural ports at Panshi and Leqing, etc. Along the coastline, there are more than 800,000 mu of beaches and shallow sea areas. Aquatic breeding in the shallow sea areas reaches 65,000 hectares, breeding razor clam, blood clam, oyster, prawn, crab and clam, etc. The Nanji Archipelago has more than 490 varieties of sea products such as shellfish and alga and is a national-level natural sea reserve. Major fishing grounds along the coast are Dongtou, Beiji, Nanji and Leqing Bay, etc. There are more than 370 kinds of fish such as hairtail, yellow-fin tuna, eel, silver pomfret fish, Spanish mackerel and Chinese herring, etc.

In the subtropical monsoon zone, Wenzhou is well known for its mild climate, rich rainfall and sufficient sunshine, with distinctive four seasons. Average annual temperature is 18Cº, average annual rainfall is between 1,500 and 1,800 millimeters, and annual frog-free period is 275 to 280 days.

Wenzhou has more than 30 kinds of mineral resources such as zinc, copper, aluminum, manganese, tin, molybdenum, silver and iron, etc. Non-metallic ores include aluminite, pyrophyllite, kaolin, fluorite, quartz and granite, etc. Of them, the reserves of aluminite account for 80% of the country's total, winning Wenzhou the fame of "capital of aluminite in the world". The reserves and quality of its granite are also among the top ones in the country.

Wenzhou Port is one of the 20 major hub ports along China's coastline. At present, there are four port areas in the city, namely: the Old Port Area, Yangfushan Port Area, Longwan Port Area and Qili Port Area.

At the foot of beautiful mountains and beside the sea, Wenzhou enjoys many natural tourism resources of splendid mountain sceneries and beautiful water views. National-level scenic spots include Yandang Mountain and Nanxi River; and national-level natural reserves include Wuyan Mountain Range and Nanji Island.

With a long history and well-developed culture, Wenzhou also boasts rich cultural relics and historic sites. National-level cultural relics and historic sites total 39, including Shi Peng Tomb, Liu Ji Temple, Zhenghetang Kiln Ruins, Stone Pagoda of Kwan-yin Temple, and Ye Shi Tomb, etc.
