In Nanjing, there are numerous of remains of the Ming Dynasty. Ming tombs are the most impressive, which show that Najing has been a golden time in the Ming Dynasty.
The Filial Tomb built for Zhu Yuan Zhang, the founder of the Ming Dynasty lies in the northeast of Nanjing, and is one of the largest ancient imperial tombs of our country. Up till now, it has a history of 600 years. The preparations were started in 1376, and the construction began in 1381. After Zhu Yuan Zhang died of illness, he was buried here. In 1413, the construction was finished at last. As you know, Emperors were used to going about quietly, and death was no exception, at the time when Zhu Yuan Zhang was buried, his wife, concubines and some of his servants, many of whom were buried alive. The tomb was originally 2.62 km in deep, and its enclosing wall was 23 km in circumference. Within the walls, there were thousands of pine trees and deer.
Today, some of the original are still there. Such as, stone animals, large golden gate, stone figures, palaces and the ruins of cities.
Sun Quan Tomb:
In front of the Filial Tomb of the Ming Dynasty, there is hillock, former name Sun Ling Gang. Sun means Sun Quan, the founder of Wu Gou in the Three-kingdoms, whose two wives and his son Sun Deng were buried with him. This area was also the oldest imperial mausoleum for imperial family members and relatives of the former 6 Dynasties.
When Zhu Yuan Zhang, the Emperor of the Ming Dynasty, prepared to built his tomb, an officer in charge of the projects suggested him to move Sun Quan tomb away from here, Zhu Yuan Zhang said: "Sun Quan is a hero, why not to let him be the doorkeepers for me." So, when the Finial Tomb was built, only the stone-unicorn in front of the Zhu's tomb was moved to the other site, and Sun's tomb was almost remained the original appearance.
