Located at the northeastern part of the urban area of Kaifeng City, the Iron Pagoda Park is named after the Iron Pagoda (Kaibao Temple) in the park. The park occupies a total area of 51.24 hectares of land and is one of the 100 best-known parks across China.
Built in 1049 during the Northern Song Dynasty, the Iron Pagoda, located at the east part of the park, has the fame of "the First Pagoda under the Heaven". The octagonal-shaped pagoda is 55.88 meters high and has 13 levels. It is also known as Kaibao Temple Pagoda because the park was once the place where the Kaibao Temple was located. Since the Yuan Dynasty, people started to call it the Iron Pagoda due to the iron-gray color of its glazed bricks. The Iron Pagoda is famous worldwide because of its outstanding architecture craftsmanship and grand but elegant structure. The Iron Pagoda adopted the traditional Chinese wood-structure and was decorated with more than 10 patterns of brick carvings including flying Apsaras and kylins. Having undergone numerous wars, floods and earthquakes for more than 900 years, the Iron Pagoda still stands towering, which makes architects and visitors acclaim its architecture and arts as the acme of perfection.
About 100 meters west of the Iron Pagoda is a grand hall with lacquered ridgepoles and painted girders. Built in 1986, the Welcoming Buddha Hall, the largest of its kind in the park, has 24 big poles supporting it and 96 lion sculptures surrounding it. The hall was built to enshrine and worship a Buddha of the Northern Song Dynasty.
