The former name of the New Road was Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro which is the main traffic street, linking Avenida da Praia Grande and the Inner Harbour. Its starting point is the Bank of China Mansion and on the right side there is the new mansion of the Atlantic Bank. Even though it goes like this, it has still kept off the Front Wall built in 1902. Then you come the Municipal Council.
To have a look of its back side garden, you can see the Library and the Gallery of the old Portugese architechture. On the oblique opposite side of the Municipal Council is the Largo do Senado whose ground is all paved with crushed stones of Portugese style. On the right side are Benevolence Church and Chapel of Our Lady of Penha, which were built in 1590.
When the Macau Government repaired it in 1997, it set up a treasure house inside the three storey high Bell Tower, in which many art style Mass articles and precious articles of Holy images of wood sculptures are kept. On the left turn in the middle sector of the New Road, you come to the Rua de Felicidade, the place of shooting flowers in old days, has been decorated anew. Many nearby shops sell Macau flavour refreshments and barbecued pork in open oven etc. If you want to buy some gifts home you may have a look at this place.
