Chihkan Mansion, located at Tainan City of Taiwan Province, is an imposing architecture of Chinese style and is an important historical relic of the province.
When the Dutch occupied Taiwan, Chihkan Mansion was built as a castle on sea in Chihkan area in the years of Emperor Yongli's reign of the Ming Dynasty. Local people call it the Red Hair Mansion, because it was made of red bricks and tiles, hence known also as the "Red Mosaic Mansion". In 1661 (the 15th year of Emperor Yongli's reign of the Qing Dynasty) Zheng Cheng Gong stormed into Taiwan and with the mansion served as the headquarters, went on a punitive expedition against the Dutch aggressive army in efforts to recover the lost territory of Taiwan. The Chihkan Mansion has become a significant place of historic interest and scenic beauty ever since. In 1862 (the 1st year of Emperor Tongzhi's reign of the Qing Dynasty), the mansion was destroyed in a big earthquake, and in the years of Emperor Guang Xu's reign, Wencheng Pavilion, Haishen (Sea God) Temple and other buildings were constructed on the ruin.
In the Chihkan Mansion on display are Treaty of Surrender by the Dutch and Zhen Cheng Gong's military sea chart for combating against the Dutch army and other valuable historic objects. There still remain a huge cannon and an observatory on the second floor. At the square center in front of the mansion, a series of carved statues were made showing Zheng Cheng Gong accepting the submission of surrender by the Dutch army. The picture showing the acceptance of submission of surrender represents the symbol of victory and heroism of the Chinese nation.
The Chihkan Mansion borders on the sea. The red brick walls glittering in the setting sun radiate forth a myriad of rosy rays and the picture appears to be even more gorgeous combining with the shining of the sea waves. People call it "Chihkan the glow of the Setting Sun".
